A Powerful Conversation
Thursday, June 19, 2008
As I’ve mentioned before, we’ve taken the new Let’sTalk MONEY Game™ live, and I’ve been blown away by the breakthroughs people have experienced, thanks to the amazing coaching skills of our players.
I specifically designed the coaching steps in the game so that anyone could easily use them to guide someone to action; I just never imagined that people from such varied backgrounds would do it so effortlessly and so expertly—and with strangers, no less.
The experience has truly validated what I knew to be true all along: give people a safe and fun environment, simple tools, and a clear path to results, and they will adapt the necessary behaviors for financial success—talking and tracking—without much hesitation.
I let myself be coached in a couple of rounds of the game, and here’s what I experienced:
-
I was challenged at first to let go and let someone else lead the conversation
-
In very short order, I was glad to have the space and time to wonder aloud about the possibilities for changing and improving my circumstances
-
I was deeply grateful to have someone there to listen, and to guide me to new perspective and commitments
And, knowing that we are playing again at the end of the month, I’m working harder than ever to keep my commitments to action, so I can share the wealth of my experiences, challenges, and victories with my accountability partners.
Even if you haven’t played the Let’sTalk MONEY Game yet, you can benefit by taking the following elements of success into your next financial conversation:
-
Set the stage for success by showing up with a willing, curious attitude
-
Don’t be too hard on yourself, or second-guess the questions about your situation—just start by answering what feels true for you at the moment
-
Express what you really, really want, and feel the magic of claiming it
-
Commit to a specific strategy for change
-
Share the wealth of your experience with others who would benefit from it
When you bring an open mind and a fun and willing heart to your financial conversations, you clear the way to a relationship with money that brilliantly supports what matters to you most. Imagine the possibilities!
